North Fork Dark Sky Coalition
Like many other coastal communities, the rural character of the East End has been under siege for decades. Increased traffic, urbanization, habitat loss, and water quality degradation are slowly transforming this beautiful place into something that resembles more of a metropolitan suburb.
With these changes comes increased outdoor lighting, which also negatively impacts the environment. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, outdoor lighting releases 21 million tons of carbon dioxide per year in the United States. It also wreaks havoc on natural ecosystems, threatening life-sustaining behaviors such as reproduction, nourishment, sleep and protection from predators. And, it prevents us from seeing the magnificent Milky Way or even the Big Dipper.
To raise awareness about the wonders of our awe-inspiring night sky—and the importance of protecting it—the Group joined forces with civic, environmental, astronomical, business, and environmental organizations to form the North Fork Dark Sky Coalition (NFDSC).
