Tuckahoe Center Project Returns – South Fork Traffic Woes Will Increase
TO SIGN THE PETITION: SCROLL TO BOTTOM, ADD YOUR NAME TO END OF LETTER AND ANY ADDITIONAL COMMENTS.
Last year, East End residents JUST SAID NO to a change-of-zone application for the largest regional shopping center east of the Shinnecock Canal in 30 years, and it would be built right on the already-gridlocked County Road 39.
After extensive local testimony, concerned citizens took their case to the Suffolk County Planning Commission (SCPC), which rejected the project last December. But the developer retaliated with lawsuits against individual members of the SCPC that voted against his project.
Even as the lawsuits are still pending, the developer went back to Southampton Town with a few minor modifications (a little more landscaping, a 10% reduction in overall floor area, and the removal of one drive-through window).
Inexplicably, the Town Board allowed these minor modifications to pass for a substantive change in the application and has sent the project back to the SCPC for another review. If the SCPC issues an approval (and there is heavy pressure being applied) the project will have a far easier time at the Town Board when it comes back to Southampton.
Now it’s time once again to make a stand:
On Tuesday, October 11 at 10:00 a.m. the Planning Commission will hold a new public hearing on Tuckahoe Center project. With new members on the Commission (including a new chairperson) there is no certainty about what the Commission will do. Clearly the developer’s prior lawsuits against individual members are meant to send a message to other members who must now vote on the project.
Please help put an end to this proposal for good and let the Planning Commission know that its original “NO” vote is the only responsible vote for the future of the region and our overburdened roadways.
Please Attend the Public Hearing:
